What will be your Legacy

I have a confession to make: For some reason, I've been reading obituaries on a regular basis these days. Not sure why. I guess, like most human beings, as we get to the half-time point of our lives, we connect to our mortality and realize that – no matter how long we live – our days are numbered. You might think that connecting to the fact that one day you will die is a depressing thing to consider. To me it's just the opposite – connecting to my mortality breathes more life into my days. It energizes me. It makes me want to give my best, seize every opportunity that crosses my path and stand for something higher.
What I want to encourage you to consider, more than anything else, over the next 30 days is this: “What will be your legacy?” What will be the footprint that you will leave behind to show the generations who will follow you that you have walked the planet? What will be your mark?
I read obituaries to teach me more about what a well-lived life looks like. I learn what to do from the good ones and what to avoid from the not so great ones. Too many people don't really get what life's all about until they are just about to die. I don't want to be one of them. And my guess is neither do you.

Hmm. My friend T and I were talking yesterday about love, and he said, "Yeah, I don't want to be on my death bed and realize that there was love there all along, and I just never got it".

I have thought about this too and have to admit my legacy will be pretty much nothing. And I am not doing anything that will create a legacy...

      Ah... a good question.

I've traveled the world for most of the past 4 years. I think that I'll be remembered for that - and hopefully I've inspired others to follow a similar path.

But now I have a new vision. I'm getting tired of traveling. It's time for something new. I want to buy a 300' cruise ship and turn it into a living space/art project on an epic scale. If it happens, it'll certainly be memorable.

What if your legacy is something really personal and small that only you and two other people know about? Is a quietly lived life one that would satisfy any of you?

Personally, yes. A quietly lived life is a life lived none the less. I’m more concerned with doing the things that I want to do while I am still on this planet. I don’t want to judge anyone as everyone has their own motives for what they do with their time in this plain, however I see too many people struggling through life because they are either too afraid to pursue their dreams or do not think that they can accomplish them for whatever reason…finances, family, career. Trust me, I struggle with every one of those issues’s as well and I am far from figuring it out. I want my legacy simply to be that I did what I wanted to do and accomplished what I wanted to accomplish. I want my children to have that same attitude. The only person I need to make happy is myself. I know that sounds selfish but it’s true. I don’t think it really mattes how big or public your legacy is or even if you knowingly work on it because when you are gone you will be remembered by someone for something. What you want that something to be is up to you.

I agree with Michael. I don't care who or how many people know what I do, just that I do what I really want to... at least some of the time ...

However, being a dj and event promoter, 'quietly lived' may not apply ;-)
