Re: Can money buy happiness
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 10:25 PMYes...but only temporarily because something new and improved always comes along that promises to make our lives better and the advertising world has capitalized on this by telling us that if we want to be successful and happy that we need to be driving this car, wearing these clothes, living in this neighborhood, drinking this, eating that, etc.
Do we buy this? Apparently we do and in my opinion that is very unfofrtunate. People have convinced themselves that in order to be happy they need to have a lot of stuff. Stuff takes money. So....they need money to buy their happiness. Now, I'm no different than the majority of the people in that I wish I had more money. I would love to be debt free....but if I was debt free what would I do with all the money that I had. Hmmm, let me think about that one for awhile.
I am not neccessarily happy 100% of the time and I do realize that my happiness is often times affected by circumstances beyond my control, however, I try really hard to keep a positive outlook on life knowing that the joy I possess is not temporal based upon wealth and possessions but eminates from within and is a result of my relationship (not religion) with God.
Something that helps me keep these things in perspective, and do I need help there, is something that I read out of the 6th chapter of Matthew. It talks about worrying about material things...you know, STUFF that money can buy to make us happy. The part I like the best is the 33rd verse. These puts it into perspective for me.
I didn't mean to get so long winded and I sincerely don't want to come across as "preachy" and yes...it is an interesting article.
