Re: Things to do before I die
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 1:34 AMI was able to cross off my 95th item on my list of 221 things to do before i die list on July 4th when I got to skydive in Waseca Minnesota. What a rush. It was more, much more then I ever expected. I also didn't expect to suffer a Tib/Fib fracture when I landed. I had surgery on the 15th to repair the damage, 6 screws and a metal plate. Can't wait till it's all healed so I can do it again and land it right this time.

Re: Things to do before I die
Sun, July 18, 2004 - 10:25 AMI checked out your list...
The best day to see the Northern Lights is Martin Luther Kings Birthday. I was in Iceland for two of them and that night they were spectacular. As for a haunted house I grew up in a 250 year old log cabin and we owned an older one that you couldn't pay me to go into after dark. Check out Hanover PA's pictures. Your goals are definitely do-able.
Mine are a bit out of my control:
I want to save a person's life.
I want to add more meaning to the lives of people around me.
I want to make others happy
I want to become a successful tour operator.
I want to Kayak the St. John's River.
I want to Kayak the garden of Eden.
Things I will accomplish by the end of 2005:
I want to build a Medicine Wheel.
I want to work the VIP tent at the King Fish Tournament
I want to be the Tour manager for 15 major group tours.
I want to make at least 1 long term Jewish friend.
I want to make at least 1 long term Muslim friend.

Re: Things to do before I die
Fri, November 19, 2004 - 4:45 AMSorry I haven't replied until now.
Northern Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania are full of real American Treasures. This log cabin is one of a few structures still standing in just south of the Mason Dixon that date back before the fire in Baltimore in the mid 1800's. It is built of wood that has petrified. (some type of cherry wood that was killed by the invasion of the Japanese beetle) The other log cabin on the farm is over 200 years old.
The other buildings that predates the fire are old Mills.
I researched getting the Historical Society to return this building to it's original state with a slate roof etc... but the paperwork is immense and the farmer is afraid that the state would try to get the property (Maryland has somewhat a reputation for doing this in the past). Farm land is getting very rare in this area unless it is owned by the Mennonites or Amish.
The area is developing incredibly quick. A few years the old hotel that predated the civil war times was burnt by arsonist and is now part of a development. (Sorry but I never took pictures of it)
Hanover is a neat town just North of the Mason Dixon that is embedded with Civil War treasures. A neat little side trip out of DC. If I were to recommend a route to follow from DC I would recommend coming up route 97 (stopping at the Union Mills Homestead and continuing through Littlestown to Gettysburg) and then rapping back through PA route 94 to MD 30 and stopping at the bank in Manchester. You will see a bunch of statues etc... In the square in Hanover. Great town, awesome good hearted people. (on the edge of Mennonite country).
This whole area is considered the heartland of PA (go figure that a big portion of it is in Maryland) and responsible for much of the Hanover bean products.

Re: Things to do before I die
Fri, July 23, 2004 - 11:52 AMHmmm.... no links for me, I don't have the home-computer to spend time to make anything interesting, but I'll share a few of my goals =)
BTW, I was just invited to join this list, so I'll make a brief introduction... I'm Patti, 24, I live in Reno, NV... you can probably get a brief idea of the kind of person I am from my profile, but feel free to ask me anything or talk to me about whatever tickles your fancy =)
OK, onto the list, it's gonna be brief for now... I'll put an asterik next to the ones I've done:
conquer my fear of spiders
learn Spanish
skydive ****
become a skydiving instructor
visit England
visit Australia
see the concentration camps throughout Europe
re-connect with my soul mate again ****(this one always seems to be a work-in-progress)
build my own home, on the beach (literally, I want to build it)
scuba dive
visit all 50 states, thoroughly ****(3 down, LOL)
now this is nowhere near complete, nor is it very detailed, but hey, it's what I could think of right now =) -

Re: Things to do before I die
Mon, July 26, 2004 - 2:46 PMPatti, how many jumps do you have under your belt? I just did my first tandem and broke my tib/fib doing it but I can't wait to get back up there again. My instructor tells me I should go for static line next time before moving onto AFF. -

Re: Things to do before I die
Mon, July 26, 2004 - 3:06 PMI have 2 so far, but unfortunately, money is an issue. My plan is to slowly, on the side, save up enough to go for getting my license so I can not only jump for free, but get paid to do it with others... First it's ground school though, then they'll wean me off an instructor, then I get AFF... I can't wait! What's static line? -
-
Re: Things to do before I die
Mon, July 26, 2004 - 3:11 PMI stole this from my DZ's website
"The STATIC LINE program includes a solo exit from the aircraft from 3,500 feet, and a solo descent under the parachute. This method requires that the student attend a 5-6 hour First Jump Class with certified instruction before jumping. The length of training may vary depending upon class size. First Jump classes conclude with a STATIC LINE jump in the afternoon, weather permitting. You will be assisted during climb out by an experienced Jumpmaster. As you leave the aircraft, the parachute is opened by a nylon strap called a 'Static Line' which is attached to the airplane. You control the parachute to a gentle landing on the airport with radio assistance by a member of the ground crew."

Re: Things to do before I die
Tue, November 16, 2004 - 8:57 PMI'm torn between making a list and just letting things happen. I made a rule for myself about 3 years ago that has now become a habit: I always say yes when someone asks me to do something new (that's within my moral fabric anyway) and I have checked off so many things on my list that doesn't exist than I think that I would have if I had made a list and actively pursued that list. Not to say that having goals is bad or that having a list is bad (PLEASE don't think that I'm criticizing lists- I'm NOT) , but be sure to leave yourself open to things just "happening" to you and surprisingly they seem to.
Here's some of my list of "things that I've done before I've died" that happened to me without me knowing that they needed to be on my list:
Going to Burning Man
Kayaking with the orcas off of Vancouver Island in Canada
Bicycling through the Canadian Rockies
Flying in a cessna over Vancouver Island
Going to a cuddle party
Going to a hot tub soaking party
Skinny dipping in the ocean off of Catalina
Island (in LA) and being invited onto people's boats for
beer and conversation (all while I was naked).
Sailing in Vancouver harbor
Sailing in Puget Sound
Going freediving for abalone and getting one myself
Preparing, cooking and eating abalone (yum!)
Joining a wacky running group that treats beer as a religion
Selling my home and living life out of an RV
Going cross country skiing to the back country huts in Colorado
Being the "princess" on a float in a parade
Designing and building a float in a parade (that got the award
for being the worst float in the parade- it really did!!)
Hiking to the top of Mount Whitney
Helping a friend run and finish an ultramarathon in the middle of
Death Valley during July in 120 degree heat
Mountain Biking in Moab, Utah
Running in and finishing an ultramarathon

Re: Things to do before I die
Tue, November 16, 2004 - 9:20 PMCass I agree that it is important that you remain open to all possibilities/opportunities that come your way. Speaking only for myself, my list serves as a motivator for myself and for those things that do require forethought on my part; it simply keeps me on track. You however have something on your "things that I've done before I've died" list that really intrigues me and that is selling your house and living out of an RV. I would love to hear more about that.

Re: Things to do before I die
Mon, November 22, 2004 - 11:49 AMHi Michael,
Yeah. I live in an RV. It was a fairly well thought-out thing that took me a good 6 months to finally decide to actually do. Check out my pictures and there are a couple of pics of the 19ft Ford Coachman Class B RV that I own. Nothing was a random choice and everything was taken into consideration. Once having done the deed, bought the RV and sold my 2 homes, it has been smooth as silk without a problem to speak of and I've had more fun than I have ever had in my life.
I'm a registered nurse so I can work for a "temp" agency that is nationwide and work anywhere that I desire. My only requirement is to get a license in the state that I work in.
I could go on and on, but it would bore the masses. If you would like more info on how to make this a reality for you, send me a message and we can talk. Or maybe start a thread if you think it might be interesting for others. I'd be glad to answer all questions.
